Two-dimensional model for overland flow simulations: A case study
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper deals with the problem of flood generation and propagation at catchment scale. The main aspect of the work is the use of 2D fully dynamic shallow water equations as tool of analysis for spatial and temporal overland flow evolution starting from an observed or predicted rain input. The paper firstly focuses on the model description. The governing equations and the numerical integration scheme are presented. Then some aspects related to the robustness of the numerical model are discussed providing three techniques able to improve its stability in presence of very shallow water depths over complex topographies. After recalled the main features of the meteorological model used in the paper, attention is focused on the simulation of a real event occurred in a small basin in Italy whose drainage area is around 40 km. Two simulations are presented in which observed and simulated rainfall have been used, respectively, as input of the overland flow model. The overall result is satisfactory.

Integrated surface–groundwater flow modeling: A free-surface overland flow boundary condition in a parallel groundwater flow model
Interactions between surface and groundwater are a key component of the hydrologic budget on the watershed scale. Models that honor these interactions are commonly based on the conductance concept that presumes a distinct interface at the land surface, separating the surface from the subsurface domain. These types of models link the subsurface and surface domains via an exchange flux that depen...
متن کاملA comparative study between two numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations
The present study aimed to investigate two numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. For this purpose, the mentioned flow equations were written in two different formulations, namely (i) velocity-pressure and (ii) vorticity-stream function formulations. Solution algorithms and boundary conditions were presented for both formulations and the efficiency of each formulation was investiga...

متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Free Surface in the Case of Plane Turbulent Wall Jets in Shallow Tailwater
Wall-jet flow is an important flow field in hydraulic engineering, and its applications include flow from the bottom outlet of dams and sluice gates. In this paper, the plane turbulent wall jet in shallow tailwater is simulated by solving the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the standard turbulence closure model. This study aims to explore the ability of a time splitting method ...
متن کاملExperimental Study and Three-Dimensional Numerical Flow Simulation in a Centrifugal Pump when Handling Viscous Fluids
In this paper the centrifugal pump performances are tested when handling water and viscous oils as Newtonian fluids. Also, this paper shows a numerical simulation of the three-dimensional fluid flow inside a centrifugal pump. For these numerical simulations the SIMPLEC algorithm is used for solving governing equations of incompressible viscous/turbulent flows through the pump. The k-ε turbulenc...
